38th Annual CHAS Charity Golf Classic
Proceeds of our tournament will once again provide support for a program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
This year we are funding the SMA Newborn Screening Project. Spinal Muscular Atrophy “SMA” is a progressive neuromuscular disease associated with the deterioration of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem. SMA is the most common genetic cause of infant death, affecting 1 in 11,000 newborns in North America. A team of specialists from the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute are ready to embark on a new research study that involves developing a test to quickly diagnose SMA. The test would be added to the newborn screening protocol. Early detection could allow treatment to begin before the disease begins to take a toll on their bodies or to take their lives.
Your support will provide critical funds to allow this project to proceed.
