Request Committee Report
Because of the efforts to raise funds in 2015 and 2016, the women of the Children’s Hospital Aid Society have donated $501,900 to the community in this past year.
Through recommendations made by the Request Committee and further reviews and approvals by the Executive and General membership of CHAS, 28 community groups were assisted during the year. Of these groups, 7 were organizations who send children to camp, a cause close to our hearts. We continue our support of Easter Seals’ Camp Horizon and other camps in Calgary and area. The Alberta Children’s Hospital was presented with $127,000 raised at the 2016 CHAS Golf Tournament for the minimally invasive HD surgical cameras program and $28,000 was raised for the Eating Disorder Program at the ACH through funds raised at the Woman2Warrior event in May. The committee included Mary Kalyniuk, Joan Andre, Joyce Laidlaw, Patricia Rossiter, Verna Pryce, Lori Moch, Toshimi Sembo, Geri Moon, Susan Desbarats/Linda Vogt, Gail Damberger (Assistant Chair) and Dorothy Woolstencroft.
This year an Urgent Needs Fund was established. We supported the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter when they needed their roof replaced and we supported the Calgary Food Bank when their supplies were unusually low. We were pleased that this fund allowed a more flexible response to agencies who needed the funds quickly. We feel it is important to be responsive to community needs and we will continue this approach in 2017.
The committee looked at 30 applications for funding and supplied dollars for needs as diverse as sport subsidies through KidSport Calgary to therapeutic horse-back riding. We supplied funds for the delivery of the Family Focused American Sign Language Program to Deaf and Hear Alberta and we supplied funds to Hospice Calgary and their child, youth and family programs. The committee worked thoughtfully and thoroughly to examine all requests and we were diligent in our efforts to foster the health and well-being of children and young adults in Calgary and area.
